Ship Motion Associates (SMA) specializes in:
 | Hydrodynamics analysis of both displacement and planing vessels |
 | Computer-Aided Design and Engineering (CAD/CAE) of ships and boats of all sizes |
Specific services include:
 | Speed/power analysis for planing hulls. Using a combination of commercial and
proprietary software, SMA will analyze new designs or existing hulls and
make recommendations for performance enhancement. |
 | Vertical plane acceleration and instability (porpoising) analysis for planing hulls. SMAs
proprietary POWERSEA program can predict vertical plane motions (surge, heave and pitch)
of planing hulls in regular or irregular waves. Based on the result of these simulations, SMA
can make recommendations for changes to improve the motions of a design. |
 | Seakeeping analysis of displacement hulls. SMAs proprietary
software tools can predict the motion response of displacement hulls. This data is used to
predict maximum hull stress and to predict human discomfort during expected or design
operating conditions. |
 | Dynamic hydrodynamics analysis (not limited to marine problems). SMA
can analyze keels, rudders, struts and other appendages to predict lift and drag. |
SMA has developed an extensive suite of proprietary computer programs
for analysis. These programs are under continuous development, and will be available for
sale to naval architects and boat builders.
| POWERSEA |
|
Time-domain simulation for high-speed planing craft. Predict
effective power requirements, seakeeping performance and vertical instabilities. Can
predict vertical accelerations in rough water (for both safety and comfort analysis). |
LINSHIP
(proprietary) |
|
Seakeeping program (6 degrees of freedom) for displacement
hulls. Supports regular and irregular seas, and shallow water conditions. |
PMARC-WIN
(proprietary) |
|
Panel method program for prediction of lift and drag of
keels, rudders and other appendages. Can be used to predict side forces in sailboat keels.
PMARC-WIN is based on PMARC-12 developed for the NASA space program. |
In addition to our proprietary software, SMA has extensive commercial CAD/CAE software
capabilities including:
 | MultiSurf from AeroHydro for free-form hull design using relational geometry |
 | AutoCAD for two-dimensional and three-dimensional mechanical design |
 | ANSYS for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of mechanical structures |
